Previously, Compass would successfully sample large collections, and if it failed to do so, it would provide a warning that it was taking too long.  Now it seems like there is a fairly short timeout, after which compass freezes on the sampling stage, and has to be quit.  The time that it takes to timeout and hang seems to be about 10 seconds.
