I just had an awesome experience, first being authenticated in the web app and afterwards downloading the Discord desktop app. When I hit authenticate a browser window opened and I was returned to the desktop app ... authenticated.

They basically host a web-server on their domain (which gives it access to the relevant cookie / localStorage storing the authentication key), which connects to a websocket server running in the desktop app to transfer the key.
