The directConnectionChecksWithSingleShard parameter enables warnings (once per hour or on every operation with higher log verbosity) and increments of the sharding statistic unauthorizedDirectShardOps when there is only one shard in the cluster. This can be used by customers to determine whether they have switched over all their connection strings before they add a second shard and block direct connections for good.
