For replication tests, we have increased the default timeout for many things to 10 minutes. The assert.soon function still uses a default timeout of 5 minutes. We might consider increasing it to 10 minutes, to make slow machine test failures even more unlikely. For example, MMAP file allocations sometimes take many minutes.
