Came up during development of SERVER-83531. We have a couple unit tests of DocumentSources which serialize themselves - and lots of them repeat the code to call the public serializeToArray method and then assert there is 1 stage.

Also there are a growing number of tests that use the serialization options - might be nice to have shorter or more concise ways to do that.
