Seemingly due to the lack of documentation sh.removeRangeFromZone does not have a corresponding database command. To remove the tight linkage between config database and the shell helper a command should be added to the server to execute the removal of a range from a zone. 

This will also remove an additional administrative action that requires a customer to run queries directly on the config server.
