Currently, our debian control file is manually specifying all package dependencies. We have already seen some instances where the same version constraints did not work across all rpm distros at installation time. If this is not already an issue for some our our deb-based distros, it may become one in the future.
According to the debian wiki, we should be using higher-level tools such as debuild and debhelper to build the package. This is also what the server uses for its packaging. In particular, this would allow us to have the build tooling auto-detect dependencies.
