Our current automated testing primarily uses debug/diagnostic builds. We test different build variations, but do not test cmake release builds.

We should add a new build variant that compiles with CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release, and choose a set of tests to run there.

We should also consider adding a Release variant for stress testing - since release builds can generate different race conditions.
