See SERVER-19083 – we should have a flavor of metadata cursor that at minimum applies __wt_session_create_strip (and stop exporting the latter to wt dump).
A more complete version could combine the main column group into the metadata for a "table:" so that applications don't need to be aware of these details for simple tables.
