As part of checkpoint tuning, I coded up a version of the change under discussion in WT-407 to test its impact on the workload. We're generally running with a single update thread, so the effect is minimal, and WT-407 considers some more restructuring than this change, but I'm posting it here in case it's a step in the right direction and saves someone else reimplementing it.
