It is often helpful when working through customer issues to know for certain what version of components are in use. The idea of this feature is that an application could be run with env WIREDTIGER_CONFIG='verbose=[version]' and the output copy/pasted to WiredTiger support. That would contain unambiguous version information about the core library as well as layers we provide (e.g., the Java or Python APIs).
