Checkpoints hold both the schema lock and the metadata lock (soon to be renamed the checkpoint lock). This is done so that the LSM metadata matches the set of files that appear in the checkpoint. Unfortunately, it means that checkpoints can block ordinary updates into an LSM tree, if a chunk becomes full while a checkpoint is in progress.
